Safe Kids Mercer County
Prevention of childhood injuries through education, collaboration, and advocacy

The Problem: Preventable injuries are the #1 cause of death among children under the age of 14. Each year, 1 in 4 children is hurt seriously enough to require medical attention, costing $165 billion dollars annually. Most of these injuries could be prevented if families took simple steps to protect their children.

Our Goals: The Safe Kids Mercer County goal is to promote the prevention of childhood injuries in children under the age of 14. The goals achieved are:
  • Increased public awareness to promote safety
  • Safer environment for children
  • Safety education in all major risk areas

Education: Safe Kids Mercer County is a program geared toward preventing childhood injury through education collaboration and advocacy.

Learn about the correct size seat for your child and the car seat laws:
  • Did you know children have to be rear-facing until the age of two (2) years?
  • Did you know a child has to be in a booster seat until the age of eight (8) years?

Learn about a safe sleeping environment for your infant:

  • Did you know SIDS/Cribs for Kids advocates for an infant to sleep in a pack 'n play up to 12 months
  • Did you know there shouldn't be anything in the crib except the infant?

Vehicle Safety: When car seats are correctly installed and used, they are extremely effective in saving lives. However, they can be complicated to install and use, making mistakes very common. That's why Safe Kids Mercer County holds Car Seat Safety Check-Up events in which trained child passenger safety specialists inspect car seats and ensure proper installation and use. For a list of scheduled Car Seat Check-Up events near you, visit www.safekids.org.
